RoundAbout: Car Culture and Auto News with a Different Spin

A podcast devoted to the weird, under-reported and often humourous side of automotive news and car culture. Each week, our crack team of contributors picks an automotive theme and gathers to talk about the news items and whatever else they can convolute to fit that theme. We also talk about what new (or old) cars we've been driving each week, check out the latest viral videos and look at hot new auto gadgets.

RoAb #26 - The 'More is Less' Episode

The Geneva Motor Show reminded us that just as "less is more," the inverse is just as, if not more true: more is definitely less. Aston Martin takes a tiny Toyota iQ and decks it out in full luxury garb and yet: somehow worse. Mansory adheres flashy pieces of golden chrome to a blue Rolls-Royce and creates a monstrosity. And the Sbarro Autobau is an abomination worse than Pontiac could have ever dreamed. Plus researchers come up with an ingenious solution to identifying potholes as asphalt disintegrates in our Blind Spot, and our Stupid Car Trick is a vomit-inducing exercise as a 15-year-old gets a brand new Camaro SS.

RoAb #25 - The 'Gold Medal' Episode

It's the moment you wait for every four years: the RoundAbout Winter Games in which news stories compete for the coveted RoAb Gold Medal. A GM worker takes the medal in Road Warriorism as he racks up more daily miles than any of the competition. Meanwhile, a driver of a Silverado takes the award in Near Misses as he narrowly averts an unorthodox vasectomy. In the highly-competitive Stupidity category, a Bugatti owner (well, former owner) once again takes the prize. Plus Zach, Jeffrey and even Joey all have cars (and planes) In the Garage, and we have an Alaska edition of Meet Your Roadmates!

RoAb #24 - The 'Not So Fast' Episode

So, you're a crook in Hoboken with designs on a couple Land Rovers that don't belong to you? You think you have the perfect getaway planned, but not so fast. Those SUVs you've just stolen are probably driving about as fast as the Deja Vu Strippermobile down a crowded boulevard in Florida. But if you think that's the only place you're going to see a booty shaking out the back of a car, then you haven't met the pink lady of NASCAR. All that and more in this 'Not So Fast' edition of RoundAbout. Plus we're back with America's favorite gameshow The Price is CORRECT, Miss MotorMouth has a doozy of a tale about when Malibu meets a train (standing still), and we'll actually provide some useful car advice (what?!?) in our Tip of the Week!

RoAb #23 - The 'Love-Hate Episode' Episode

Is there more polarizing a holiday than Valentine's Day? If you're in a happy, stable relationship then you probably love it. On the other hand, you may be one of the legions who prefer to stay indoors with the windows shuttered, in which case you probably hate it. So, this week we bring you stories of automotive love and hate.

Turns out that despite raising the ire of environmentalists everywhere, the Suburban is the GM vehicle most loved by the youngsters. And, over time there are those noises and creaks in your car that you come to both despise and adore. One clever group of artists have composed a veritable love song made entirely from the noises of a Jeep. Plus we've got another installment of Meet Your Roadmates, this week the Dodge Edition, and we'll get a Chicago Auto Show wrap-up from our guest Colin Bird!

RoAb #22 - The 'From Bad to Worse' Episode

There's this car company--you may have heard of it--but it's having a really bad week, heck, couple of weeks. No, it's not one of the automakers crawling from the wreckage that is the smoldering city of Detroit. Actually, it's that one that all the magazines tell you is the sure buy. First things went bad for them, but lo and behold, they have gotten worse and worse. So, in solidarity we're going to stand by their side and bring you, dear listener, the 'From Bad to Worse' episode.

It was bad when the Pontiac Solstice was sent to the old folks home to retire, it's worse now that it's been bastardized as an ugly, ugly EV. And, when you attempt to right an overturned semi, remember to put the parking brake on. Speaking of out-of-control trucks, we smell a new anti-porn law coming to a state near you. Plus we've got another installment of In the Garage as Zach gets a turn behind the wheel of the Buick LaCrosse and it's everyone's favorite gameshow, The Price is CORRECT!

RoAb #21 - The 'Drunk' Episode

Every week like brand-new 21-year-olds we hit up the clubs and dive bars of the internet to celebrate our freedom. Before blacking out in a stranger’s rose bushes, we might find a few interesting things to talk about, or even a cohesive, Zen-like theme. On the road to incapacitation we’ll ride in a Sidecar through Manhattan to grab a Long Island Iced Tea. But we’ll have to watch out for Irish Car Bombs, relations between Black Russians and White Russians have been on the rocks. If we can dodge the hail of 9 mms and avoid ending up like JFK, we might be able to get some Old Fashioned advice from Three Wise Men. Thank GOD birthdays – and podcasts – only come once in a Blue Moon. What starts out like Sex on the Beach, ends like an apocalypse with Four Horsemen.

It's like they say, you only turn 21 once, so join us as we celebrate with a bad decision or two. A New Hampshire woman racks up three DWIs in one week. Australian scientists come up with fabric technology that will resist vomit smell. And, we wake up next to an Iranian diesel and wonder what else we did last night. Plus we've got another installment of AutoGadget and Zach Bowman finally gets back into the press fleet with In the Garage.

This week, in the spirit of our theme, I'm taking an "alternative" approach and keeping the synopsis uncharacteristically brief.

Toyota says that choosing electric over gas may crash the grid. When it comes to maintenance costs you can choose between a private jet or Bugatti Veyron. Plus we've got another installment of Psy-car-logy and we play our newest game, The Price is CORRECT.

RoAb #19 - The 'NAIAS Postmortem' Episode

Well, the North American International Auto Show--otherwise known as the Detroit Auto Show--has made all the news it's going to make for this year. It was a rocky year for the Motor City, and in a way, it really showed at Cobo Hall in Detroit. The digs might have been better than last year (Chrysler was a series of unadorned cars on beige carpet in 2009), but the product reveals were notably less exciting. With the patient on the slab, we called in the best team of doctors we know ... our ... selves. Well, anyway, we're here with the official RoAb postmortem of NAIAS.

Is the new Cadillac XTS worthy of being the luxury brand's new flagship? Does the Volkswagen NCC bring anything new and exciting to the German marque? Will the Honda CR-Z finally be a hybrid that's fun to drive? We debate all these and more. Plus we've got another installment of our new Meet Your Roadmates segment, a Stupid Car Trick and the triumphant return of the long lost Psy-car-logy.

<itunes:summary>Well, the North American International Auto Show--otherwise known as the Detroit Auto Show--has made all the news it's going to make for this year. It was a rocky year for the Motor City, and in a way, it really showed at Cobo Hall in Detroit. The digs might have been better than last year (Chrysler was a series of unadorned cars on beige carpet in 2009), but the product reveals were notably less exciting.
RoAb #18 - The 'Not What it Seems' Episode

Things are not always what they seem. For instance, you might think this episode is nearly a week late. Wrong as usual, idiot. We were planning to do this episode a year from now, so technically it's early. Why are you so offended? Clearly you are unfamiliar with the word "idiot's" Greek roots. I was simply suggesting you were a private person unfamiliar with the vagaries of podcasting. Again, not what it seems.

So there you go. Houston, we have a theme. This week we've got the coolest 4x4 you never expected, a bevy of protests as the Detroit Auto Show gets going and a wrecked Yaris that is more functional than you'd think. Plus we've got some new fun and games this week including our Mystery Words of the Week, a new segment where we get to stereotype drivers and a couple of burnouts gone terribly wrong.

RoAb #17 - The '2010 Predictions' Episode

Every year on New Year’s Day we wake up in a pool of what we hope is our own vomit. Staggering to our feet, we search for our pants, a shred of dignity and a cohesive, Zen-like theme. In the process we also uncover a host of stories and news bites to fit that theme, however hungover or dehydrated they may be. And whatever’s leftover, well, we talk about it anyway because it’s 2010!

Besides the obvious, like more ridiculous airport security hoops to jump through and enviro-nazis wailing about carbon and polar bears, what’s in store for the New Year? Well, this week the RoundAbout crew plays prophet and tries to shed a little light on 2010. The group reaches consensus on some of their predictions, but the automotive oracles are divided on other points – like Chrysler. Even with imported new leadership, will the beleaguered automaker be able to pull through? Has the new century smell worn off already after just one decade? Find out on this week’s installment of RoundAbout!

RoAb #16 - The 'Craigslist' Episode

Every week like grieving families cleaning out a grandparent’s house after their passing, we find all kinds of old canned goods, birc-a-brac and maybe even a cohesive, Zen-like theme. Sure, some of what we discover is worth keeping, but the rest of it we have no use for, so we’ll post it on Craigslist! After all, we’re too guilty to throw it away. How else are can you get rid of granddad’s clothes, his collection of VHS tapes and portable dialysis machine? And how else can you make money doing it? Now, if we could only wash the smell of old-people and shame from our souls.

That's right, this is the Craigslist episode that our panel has been performing--albeit informally--before each recording for the last 15 episodes. We're so enamored with both the awful and wonderful finds that show up on the Internet's classified free-for-all that we decided to make an entire episode out of it. Among our many gems, you'll find a Fiat Abarth 850TC (replica), a '66 Thunderbird Convertible, and a Jeep Comanche that brings back memories for one Jeffrey Ross.

RoAb #15 - The 'Holiday Wishlist' Episode

Every week we hit-up the discount travel sites in search of the cheapest airfare around. During the hunt, we find a wide range of ticket prices and airlines, and maybe even a cohesive, Zen-like theme. All we want is to make it home for the holidays, and find a few off-putting news bites to fit the theme, but our flight was canceled due to bad weather and we’re stuck in the Minneapolis airport eating stale Cinnabons and sleeping on the floor. Meanwhile, visions of Spykers and Audis dance in our heads.

This week, with a few short buying days left in the holiday season, our esteemed panel assembles its holiday wishlist. Eric yearns for a Tag Heuer watch. Zach has a soft spot for an NSX. Craig asks that we donate to the Focus Fund. And Ben just wants a way to operate his iPhone's GPS without freezing his fingers off. Plus, our Blind Spot story, the Lincoln MKT is In the Garage and an atrociously styled G6 in this week's Highway Hearsay.

One man's fashionable and functional Russian, rabbit fur hat is another man's hideous, PETAian nightmare. It's all a matter of perspective, and of course the same is true in the automotive world.

Dodge's chunky Challenger is named Consumer Reports' most satisfying vehicle. A Chinese truck driver's eye beholds the icy winds of the open road. Hofele melds the best of both worlds in the Audi family to create a truly hideous steed. Plus, our Blind Spot story, the Ford Transit Connect is In the Garage and the internet's coming to your car in this week's AutoGadget.

Every week like depression-era farmers we flee the Oklahoma panhandle and head west across the internet toward California, I mean, we set out to find the best news topics from the past week, and a cohesive, Zen-like theme to tie them all together. On the way, we uncover an array of different stories and news bites to fit that theme, however hopeless or worn out they may be. And whatever’s left over, well, we have a serious discussion about it anyway, because the Dust Bowl was no laughing matter.

A sporty new version of the Cadillac CTS. Honda's weird take on an eco-friendly urban vehicle. The brand new brooding Audi. That's so LA ... Auto Show 2009. Plus, Eric has the new CTS wagon In the Garage and Michelle gets a look at the new more powerful Mustang V6.

RoAb # 12 - The 'Leftovers' Episode

Every week like crazed amazons, we storm the mall of the internet, battling killer crowds in search of the best Black Friday deals, and if Montgomery Ward sells out of seven-dollar toasters, well, we settle for a cohesive, Zen-like theme instead -- and a pretzel from the food court. During the siege we uncover an array of different stories and news bites that fit our theme, however useless or misfitting they may be. And whatever's leftover, well, we buy it anyway, because if we didn't, we'd miss out on the savings.

Don't know about you, but even though we've still got a tryptophan hangover we're really starting to eye those leftover mashed potatoes and turkey. So belly up to the table in your bathrobe and get some automotive leftovers with your favorite RoundAbout crew.

Every week like brave Puritans fleeing religious oppression, we sail across the Atlantic in search of freedom, and a cohesive, Zen-like theme. Upon arrival, we find all kinds of different topics and news bites to steal from the natives, however wrong it may be. And whatever’s leftover, well, we give thanks for it anyway, because it’s ours now and we feel guilty about taking it.

Get it? This is our Thanksgiving show.

Eric is Thankful for a certain famous Brit. Jeffrey, not so much. Nissan owners can be thankful that CVT warranties have been doubled. <itunes:subtitle>RoAb # 11 - The 'Thankful' Episode</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Every week like brave Puritans fleeing religious oppression, we sail across the Atlantic in search of freedom, and a cohesive, Zen-like theme.

Meanwhile, we all give thanks that the Buick Regal will be getting a manual transmission for the hardcore enthusiasts. All that plus, our features this week: Blind Spot, In the Garage, Highway Hearsay and more!</itunes:summary>

RoAb #10 - The 'Identity Crisis' Episode

As always we scoured the news of the past week, and again as always we ignored the serious, depressing stuff and aimed for levity. Perhaps we just want to close our eyes to the news of lay-offs and recall scandals so we can pretend the auto industry is still the chest-thumping, so-goes-the-auto-industry-so-goes-the-world behemoth it once was. So what if we have an Identity Crisis. Don't judge us!

The Apple iMo design concept is an iPod that thinks it's a car. The new Mitsubishi Outlander is a CUV that thinks it's an EVO. And, if you check out Craig's List you'll find a Chevy S10 that thinks it's a rear-engine Cadillac. All that plus, our features this week: Blind Spot brings us a story of stupidity as only the Internet can, the new VW GTI is In the Garage, Craig has another Highway Hearsay and more!

RoAb #9 - The 'Trying Too Hard' Episode

So SEMA was this week, and as has become the tradition over time, we saw a lot of over-the-top, never-gonna-happen cars. It made us think, are these guys overcompensating for something? Hmm, I smell a theme ... Perhaps this episode will be all about trying too hard.

As if to will away all bad associations, Chrysler creates a new Aston-Martin-esque logo. Meanwhile a Toyota Tacoma tries way too hard to be a middle-schooler's fantasy. Oh yeah, and two Trans-Am body kits are a little too eager to bring back the '80s. All that plus, our features this week: Blind Spot is all about creepy, fez-wearing old men, AutoGadget will ensure that you never lose your car in the parking lot again, Highway Hearsay is about new Chrysler product that's already out on the roads and more!

RoAb #8 - The 'Trick or Treat' Episode

Ah, great All Hallows' Eve, wasn't it? What'd you get? Giant gummi snake with a blue raspberry-flavored foam center? A treat to be sure--unless you are allergic to blue raspberry artificial flavoring or you have an irrational fear of gummi-based reptiles. Or did you get a three-year-old, stale circus peanut? A trick--unless you are an 82-year-old man who also likes those candies wrapped in the foil wrappers made to look like a strawberry. But we digress. Trick or Treat?

Woo-hoo! You're driving a custom Mustang! Boo! You learn that your bolt-in roll cage isn't worth the powder to blow it to hell. Guess what: the Audi S4 is better than you think--treat! Can a fancy luxury SUV actually scale uneven terrain, like say, two cars? Yes, trick. All that plus, our features this week: Blind Spot proves you have no one but your parents to blame for your driving ineptitude, a Halloween AutoGadget that will look super-sweet in your hearse, our favorite automotive horror stories in Highway Hearsay and more!

RoAb #7 - The 'What Not to Do' Episode

This week we thought we'd get all psychological on you and teach by bad example. For instance, everyone knows it's a bad idea to text on your phone while driving--don't they? Despite all the controversy around no-texting legislation, the message seems to have faded into the background noise for most people. That's why today we present you with a parade of people who learned the hard way what not to do while driving.

You know those weight limits you'll find in your owners manual? Turns out they're there for a reason--even if you're driving a truck the size of a house. While you're driving that industrial dumptruck, by the way, don't forget that it's a workplace on wheels and all non-smoking regulations apply. And when you do get off for the weekend and go to the track, remember that just because your Ferrari has an automatic, it's no excuse to knit. All that plus, our features this week: In the Garage with a Roush 540RH Mustang, a BMW AutoGadget we take issue with, an iPhone app that drives your van in the Stupid Car Trick and more!

RoAb #6 - The 'It' Episode

This week's episode ... so very NSFW. Let us get that out of the way right off the bat. Also the first episode where almost all of us were in the same place, in fact the first episode where any two of us were in the same place, so "woo-hoo" for that--but also the crux of our problem. This week's episode was intended to be couched in delicately-crafted inneundo. Turns out, though, that when you get five guys in the same building, testosterone, and thus fart-joke mentality, trumps all. Sorry Miss Motor Mouth, but Skype doesn't transmit estrogen.

And so, we look at the automotive side of "It." Russia's answer to Hummer has, among other niceties, upholstery from the, well, most delicate part of a whale. As the automotive workforce succumbs to the economic downturn, what's a GM engineer to do? Just ask George Clooney. But ladies, don't think we've left you out because you know that everyone loves a new set of Tatas. Plus, our features this week: In the Garage with a BMW X5 diesel, another Psy-car-logy as we ask the panel what their cars say about them, the Blind Spot story of the week and more!

RoAb #5 - The 'Miami Vice' Episode

This past week J.C. France, racecar driver and grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France, found himself staring at the flashing lights of Daytona's finest in his rearview mirror as his late-night street racing spree was called to an abrupt close. We watched as the story unfolded and it only got better: an inebriated race between a lime green Lamborghini and a Porsche Cayenne, a baggie of crack cocaine, illegal possession of prescription drugs. It had the makings of an episode of "Miami Vice" so, we thought, maybe it's time for a series revival.

On today's show, we look at some of the vehicles that would find themselves right at home on the set of the 1980s smash hit. It's a blast from the past with a utilitarian Pontiac beach machine, the Corvette gets a turbo-charged eco-friendly makeover and could the Panamera be the next great convertible? Plus, our features this week: In the Garage with the Volkswagen Golf MK6, a cyber edition of Highway Hearsay as one crappy car gets traded for another, the Blind Spot story about small car buyer's remorse and more!

Some days you look at the automotive news cropping up and you realize it's a jungle out there. This week we tap into our animal instincts as we explore the zoological side of car culture.

RoAb #3 - The 'Bad Compromise' Episode

Life is full of compromises, everyone knows that. In the perfect compromise both parties come away dissappointed, but in a bad compromise there's a clear loser, and it happens in the automotive world all the time. After a week of fantasies we thought it was time to come down to Earth with the 'Bad Compromise' episode.

On today's show you'll get the rare opportunity to have an Audi R8 staring out of your garage, the Corvette will get a retro makeover, and you'll find out how one van can have two interiors. Plus, our features this week: In the Garage with the Camry and Avenger, the premiere of Psy-car-logy with a story about how Hummer drivers are saving America, the Blind Spot story of the week and more!

RoAb #2 - The 'In Your Dreams' Episode

The Frankfurt Auto Show is in full swing and busting at the seams with both fantastical and nightmarish cars. With that in mind, we were inspired to create the 'In Your Dreams' episode. Whether it's a lavish sedan you're unlikely to ever see on the road--let alone have the chance to drive--or a misshapen oddity you'd hate to meet in a dark alley, these are the vehicles that play tricks on your mind.

On today's show we look at the transformation of one of Europe's worst cars into one of its most efficient and the sedan you better get before it's gone for good. Plus, our features this week: In the Garage with the Lincoln MKT, a DIY AutoGadget with a heavenly touch, the Blind Spot story of the week and more!

RoAb #1 - The 'Better Driving Through Technology' Episode

The gang's all here (fine, mostly here) for our inaugural episode of RoundAbout. This week with the Frankfurt Auto Show on the horizon and with an eye toward more enlightening things to come we bring you the 'Better Driving Through Technology' episode. Come economic meltdown, come animal-borne plague, come celebrity deaths, despite it all, technology never only sometimes fails us.

On today's show we have a car that looks like the successor to the storied EV-1, the auto industry's answer to Velcro and roadways that will solve the energy crisis. Plus, our features this week: In the Garage with the Ford Raptor, a supercar AutoGadget that only a supertool could love, the Blind Spot story of the week and more!
